Abstract
Mehedinţi county presents remarkable territorial differences caused by the variety and age of landforms and by the classification of rural settlements according to the economic and demographic criteria. The analysis of the villages network, letter A, from a historical point of view (namely dimensions, evolution, perspectives) represents the object of this research which is based on information derived from sources, monographs, studies etc. The list of villages in Mehedinţi area highlights the fact that most of the documentary accounts are chronologically found starting with the 14th century (Totovăţ – 1374, Petroviţa, Iarcovăţ, Poptoc, Vornicele – 1387 etc.).
At the same time, we notice that during the centuries several villages did not stand the test of time and disappeared, their memory being present only in the few preserved documents.
