Abstract
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a coalition of independent states in Europe and North America, with political and military responsibilities. The alliance played a defensive and discouraging role until the end of the Cold War. The new situation created new opportunities and challenges for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to which it had to respond in order to motivate the continuity of its existence. Through its actions, the Alliance defends the fundamental principles accepted by all members: freedom, human rights and the rule of law. The organization’s actions are based on strategic concepts, adapted to political changes and the specific threats that jeopardize the security of the Member States.
