Abstract
A keen observer of the Romanian political scene and often acting as arbitrator within different conservatory groups, Lahovari manages through his positions to become appreciated by politicians from the entire Romanian political spectrum. His careful but uncompromising approaches regarding topics related to foreign policy gradually turn him into a real authority in the field. All this contributes to the outlining of a politician in tune with the problems of the Romanian society for whom the watchword was stability rather than political partisanship.
To him foreign policy had always implied a certain dedication to the true interests of the country and because of this there had been no hesitation on his behalf, especially within an agitated international climate, to resort to his political adversaries in order to prevent internal political dissatisfactions to affect Romanian foreign policy. A moderate conservative, mindful of the actual needs of the country, preoccupied with gaining the Romanian state a favourable position within the larger area of international relations, Alexandru N. Lahovari became by means of his entire activity a brilliant representative of his generation, concerned with the implementation of a natural evolution of Romanian society, far removed from the revolutionary, anarchic tendencies manifesting themselves in the second half of the 19th century.
