Abstract
Founded on field investigations, our research approaches few of the lament variants from Oltenia, which are remarked both chronologically and functionally, and belong to the rites through which the passed away separates from the community.
In the investigated space, the performed laments have an ancient character, and are accompanied by crying, which fulfils the function of relieving the pain of the soul, of accepting the event of death. The lamentations express the tension, the sufferance of the soul, and the crying, in the ritualised form of some rhythmic sequences sustained by complex verbal structures, gestures and attitudes that confer expressivity to the speech.
