Abstract
The first three decades in Craiova were defined by a period of urban, architectural, artistic, municipal effervescence, turning it into one of
the most important urban centres from the South-West of Oltenia. A town with commercial sense of purpose, it provides an ongoing attraction for merchants, artisans and small industrialists. Records and statistics certify that Romanian entrepreneurs represented the majority followed closely by Jews and other nationalities as: Armenians, Turks, Czechs, Italians, Bulgarians, Greeks, etc.
In the economic growth of the town within the period referred, can be noticed three distinct phases: one of greatness, during which there were set up a significant number of firms, with a varying lifespan (until 1916), another with significant human and material losses during The First World War (1916–1918), followed by a recovery period (1918–1924).
