Abstract
Regional development is a relatively new concept that emerged towards the end of the last millennium and found its place on the European political agenda in the 1950s, in the form of regional policies. Designed as a policy of solidarity, regional development policy is one of the most important and complex policies pursued at Community level. Its main purpose is to reduce the economic and social disparities between the regions of the community and to act in the direction of economic development and growth. In his study, the author provides the reader with a conceptual overview of the notions of regional development and regional policy, analyzing the process of regional development at the level of the European Union.
